The Pineal Gland: Seat of the Soul
Near the center of the brain rests a small, pinecone-shaped gland known as the pineal gland. Across many spiritual traditions, it has been called the seat of the soul and a gateway to spirituality. It is often linked with the “third eye,” the place where intuition, insight, and inner vision are said to awaken. Even the philosopher René Descartes described it as the principal seat of the soul.
From a physical view, the pineal gland helps regulate your body’s sleep and wake rhythm through the hormone melatonin. From a spiritual view, many seekers experience it as a doorway into deeper awareness.
You may feel drawn to this center when you notice:
• Vivid dreams or heightened intuition
• A sense of pressure or tingling between the brows during meditation
• Synchronicities and a growing feeling of connection to something greater
A simple practice: During meditation, rest your attention at the center of your head, behind the space between your eyebrows. Breathe slowly. Imagine soft light gathering there with each inhale and spreading through your whole body with each exhale. Stay for five to ten minutes, then return gently.
